The story: a brief idea
The original Red Dead Redemption was one of the most favorite games of my generation, and it’s got a place in my top five games of all time. So, it’s safe to say that I had high expectations for this pre-sequel. What I was probably most excited about was the prospect of finding out the backstory involving John Marston and the infamous Dutch van Linder gang that we learned so much about in the original game. This is a well-crafted story of the rise and fall of the Dutch van der Linde gang and Arthur’s narration between certain missions gives insight to his thoughts and perspectives on the current gang status and the things they endure. The voice acting is exceptional and helps to show a clear contrast between each character. There’s an excellent use of inflections and accents, which contributed to establishing who the characters really are and what they’ve been through, and their origin. The diverse cast of this game really helped to create more interesting interaction and dialogue between these characters, because they have so many different backgrounds and different cultures at play. The best part that it still feels authentic and organic whether it was a Native American, Irish, black, or white – all of them had representation in Dutch’s gang, but not once did you ever feel like these characters are out of place, rather, it just makes sense that each one of them are part of Dutch’s gang. There’s a character here that everybody would like and relate to and probably deem your favorite. My personal favorites were John Marston (because obviously, he’s the protagonist in the first game), Sadie Adler, Charles Smith, and Arthur, of course.
My thoughts
The Red Dead Redemption 2 explores different dimensions by presenting Arthur with a few personal and emotional challenges and tribulations that can’t be fixed by violence, which is what he’s used to. It shows that he’s not a one-dimensional character only driven by money and force; he actually tries to be the voice of reason. And although he’s not always about shooting first, he doesn’t shy away from it either. The plot is ultimately the most satisfying aspect of this game and delivers on explaining the series of events that led to the fate of the Dutch van Linder gang.
Completing the story and going back and re-watching some of the scenes from the original Red Dead Redemption makes the whole story more meaningful and, in some ways, it makes you realize that the complete story of Red Dead for both protagonists is almost like a Shakespearean tragedy.
